ABOUT THE ROLE: Cambridge Synchro (CBS) is a synchronized swimming team practicing in the Cambridge (metro Boston, MA) area. The team has 60-70 athletes who practice 1-5 times per week (depending on level) to compete at the regional and national levels. Qualified swimmers compete at US Nationals and/or Junior Olympics. The season runs from September through early July. The team is a partnership between the City of Cambridge Recreation Division and Cambridge Synchro, a non-profit and volunteer-run organization.The Cambridge Synchro Head Coach will work with Recreation managers, the Team's Parent Advisory Board members and other coaching staff to administer all aspects of training, meets, and competitions. This includes managing day-to-day administration of the team programs and assisting in the continuing development of a high-performance culture within team members. Additional hours above the 10 to 15 to accommodate practices at facilities outside Cambridge will be scheduled in coordination with the Parent Advisory Board, which manages and pays for that aspect of the program. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Independently runs coaching duties for the Cambridge Synchro team. Assists swimmers in establishing individual goals and prepares them for competition. Attends and coordinates activities of team members at selected away meets. Helps coordinate practices, schedules, and works with Recreation managers, team members, parents, and aquatics staff. Develops practice plans and routines appropriate to a variety of swimming levels. Coordinates with all coaches on all auxiliary activities. Provides clerical support by tracking individual swimmers' progress, processes meet entries, and arranging travel as necessary. Coordinates camps, clinics and workshops as necessary. Provides event information to participants, members, and staff as necessary. Develops and maintains open communication channel(s) with the Recreation management team, swimmers, coaches, parents and Advisory Board members. Leads recruitment and hiring of assistant synchronized swimming coaches based on team size and needs. Works under the direction of the Parent Advisory Board to manage practices in pools other than the War Memorial with compensation paid by Parent Advisory Board. Participate in and hold positions within NESSA, East Zone and USAAS as necessary. Administrative Duties: Create and maintain an up-to-date team roster and calendar, email groups, website and social media, coordinating with the Recreation staff and the DHSP Communications Manager. Communicate all team program information as required. Act as the first point of contact for any administrative inquiries relating to the team. Assist with the organization of all travel, travel documentation, venues and transportation for the team as necessary, and in accordance with City of Cambridge policies. Assist in building and managing budgets for the team programs/events/training. Assist with organization and ordering of training equipment. Help with the coordination of meeting room and facility usage. Meet and coordinate all team activities with all coaches, provide oversight of their training progress and activities. Establish training goals and milestones for all assistant coaches. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to demonstrate swimming skills at a proficient level. Possession of current CPR and First Aid certifications, SafeSport certification as well as USA Artistic Swimming Coaching Certification Program (CCP) Level 1, or willingness to obtain within 3 months of hiring. Performance sports and sports development, specifically Artistic Swimming, is preferred. Requires strong, effective written and verbal communication skills and minimum of 1 year administrative experience dealing with scheduling, organizing, data entry and finance work. Minimum 2 years of coaching experience, managing teams in a high-performance environment, preferred. Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment, observe confidentiality, use discretion and initiative. Must be proficient in Microsoft Office programs and/or Google apps. Some travel will be required for competitive meets. WORK ENVIRONMENT :Chlorinated Natatorium including lighting and heating/cooling systems. Will need to be able to travel to pools within Cambridge and surrounding towns. PHYSICAL DEMANDS : While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to sit, kneel, stand, stoop, communicate, reach and manipulate objects. This position requires mobility and an ability to deliver swim lessons to swimmers of various skill levels. Duties require attentiveness to visual and audible cues for recognition and identification of swimmers in distress or in process of unsafe behaviors. The position requires proficient swimming ability and the proper application of rescue and first-aid technique as well as the ability to properly extract victims from the pool(s) to the deck and move equipment.
